Sun comes out for Epsom vets versus Eastbourne

Alistair Murrell Match reports, Vets

Saturday 22nd June 2019 – OSL, Ewell

Epsom Vets :      7 (Foote 2, Earle 2, Murrell 3)
Eastbourne :       1 (Edwards)

The sun finally came out as Epsom vets hosted a touring Eastbourne side in a pre pre season runabout at OSL.

Eastbourne, fresh form refreshments on their tour bus, started the game well with several near misses in the opening exchanges. They were made to pay for their poor finishing in the first quarter as Davidson released Foote who finished well one on one with the Eastbourne keeper. Shortly afterwards an optimistic long ball from Harris deflected over the entire Eastbourne defence to be neatly over headed in by Earle on the back post. With Eastbourne beginning to tire in the 2nd quarter another Davidson assist allowed Murrell to finish into an empty net. More pressure from Epsom in the 2nd half saw further goals from birthday boys Murrell and Foote plus one more from Earle. In between, during a rare Eastbourne attack, Savage managed to upend the Eastbourne chairman conceding a stroke in doing so. Savage made amends by saving the resulting flick. Eastbourne were not to be denied though, scoring the final goal of the game late on.

An excellent run around for all involved. Thanks to Eastbourne for the fixture and hopefully we see you again next summer. Thanks also to Sanjay for umpiring.

Epsom vets are looking for new players as the section continues to grow. From the 2019/20 season the club will be entering league teams at over 40s, 50s and 60s levels. Additionally the vets run successful Sunday cup sides, having won 3 national finals at Lee Valley in the last 5 years. So whether you are looking for competitive or social hockey or better still both, Epsom has a team for you.
