Wanderers next on the schedule, and we know these guys from old. Solid team, always a tough and close game and typically can go either way.
Anyway, back to the game. Sun was shining (note, Maj did not need to use the weather conditions as an excuse this week), and we all turned up in a variety of sports wear. Special mention to Jamie who made his debut for Epsom and went to special effort to purchase some 99p dustbin numbers from Wilkinsons (www.wilko.com/door-furniture/wheelie-bin-number-self-adhesive-no-2/invt/0279421?VBMST=dustbin numbers) and had I assume ironed them onto his make-shift shirt. The instructions do state they ‘stick to any clean dry surface’ – guess this does not extend to a sweaty hockey top, as I did notice a ‘3’ blowing about on the pitch later and this is probably an infringement of rule 17, section 4b of the Hockey rules – do not wear dustbin numbers!
Now, as expected it was a close game, and honest answer we could have done with our bash street kids in the squad (anyone called Jack, Rob or Jamie will do) as they would have run riot today. But have to say the midfield of Luke (who showed no signs of a hangover), and Jack B were just great today and controlled the middle of the field. Also great game again from Dan up front and Jamie (who started with 2 numbers and finished with less) on the left.
Kids please note, experience trumps youth (or it does when you reach 42) and we had a really good first half, with Rob Maslin just awesome in the first period and who tore the Wanderers defence apart, and set up Daniel Green for a well deserved and first Epsom goal to put us 1-0 up at half time. The only other aspect of note was Andy Adams who managed to collide with their winger, and it was clear from 10 foot apart (kids this is about 3 metres in modern speak) there was going to be a major collision as the 2 wilder beasts on roller-skates (one wearing an Epsom top, and one a Wanderers top) sort of came together and crashed to the floor.
Eager to dominate the second half, we pushed on and fair to say there was good chances at both ends, but a welcome return by Deano saw him pounce on a deflection off the keeper and flick the ball into the net for 2-0 up. Wanderers had their chances and we had at least 3 sure goals saved off the line from the ever reliable Andy, Kris and Matt. Thus whilst it is usually the goal scorers who are the remembered heroes of the day, we definitely won this game from the back – solid at the back – or is it soiled at the back? A good mannered and enjoyable game, and we came out as rightful winners at 2-0 up. Tom – a clean sheet and lets keep this up.
Really good performance guys, and delighted to be expanding the squad with all players giving it 110% and deserving their place in this team. Suppose i’d better make up some MoM and TFC. For me there were 3 special performances from Rob Maslin, Luke and Jack B – so take your pick. TFC is a difficult one as we all did well, but I will ‘take one for the team’ given my inability to complete the short corner routine which we practice each week. Up to 5th in the league, and a tough game vs Purley next week.
