Sunbury – 10/09/2016:  A young Epsom squad progressed to the final stages of the Surrey Cup on Saturday, finishing second in a four-team qualifying group.

Epsom kicked off the Group fixtures at 10:00am with a 1-0 win over Camberley and Farncombe. The first half saw Epsom’s young side looking lively and dictating play. Just after half-time striker Alex Culff gave them the lead from close range. Epsom missed several chances to add to this lead, but were comfortable enough in seeing out the win.

Epsom next played Sunbury and Walton Hawks at 12:15 in what was effectively a knockout tie, given the presence of a strong Spencer 2s side in the group. The first-half was keenly contested but just after half-time a counter-attack saw James Midmer break clear and fire home for 1-0. Shortly after, Epsom switched play neatly in the 25 and Drew Vermeulen’s laser-guided pass was deflected home neatly by Culff for 2-0. Epsom played out the game reasonably assuredly, although Sunbury threw more men forward in the closing stages and skipper Ed Burton-Brown had to make a few sharp stops to keep a clean sheet.

With qualification secured, Epsom then played a much stronger Spencer 2s side who had also already qualified. Spencer were fielding some handy players and this time Epsom’s inexperience caught up with them as they folded to a tame 8-0 loss.

Whilst ending disappointingly the day as a whole was an encouraging start for a young squad giving experience to five players under the age of 18 and eight under the age of 23. Onwards and upwards!
