Epsom: 4 (Turnbull, J.Hunt, Midmer 2)
Epsom ran out 4-1 winners of their first pre-season friendly, against Worthing at Angmering School.
Epsom travelled a bit light on numbers but struck early with a clinical counterattack finished smartly by Steve Turnbull. Soon after, Epsom’s second short corner saw some neat improvisation from Liam White find the injector James Hunt, who lifted home like a centre-forward for 2-0. Worthing soon struck back from a short corner, a strong dragflick coming back off the post and bundled home. The remainder of the half was fairly even but just before half time a patient Epsom move was flashed home by James Midmer at close-range for 3-1.
The second half started with a sharp Epsom counterattack, this time Turnbull advanced and found Mike Atkinson who unselfishly rolled in Midmer to tap home for 4-1. Epsom’s small squad then understandably started to tire a bit and Worthing controlled the final 20 minutes. Some strong Epsom defence held them at bay, James Harris making a number of crucial interventions and Ed Burton-Brown making one stunning save away to his right. Worthing had a number of short corners as the half went on but couldn’t convert and they too then faded a bit, the final five minutes ending pretty tamely with a 4-1 for Epsom to take back up the (sadly McDonalds-less) A24.
This was an encouraging start for Epsom, who play their first fixture on the new home pitch next Saturday against Maidenhead, all support gratefully received!
