Epsom: 4 (Midmer, Pizzey, Watts, Hugo)
Wimbledon 2s : 4
Epsom opened their pre-season campaign with an action-packed friendly against Wimbledon 2s at Reeds School. The first 15 minutes were fairly frenetic with both sides going hell for leather until inevitably low fitness levels kicked in and the game slowed down. Epsom went ahead after 20 minutes when an attack down the right was rounded off by James Midmer from close range. Epsom then almost immediately went 2-0 up when Matt Simmonds charged through the centre and found Alex Pizzey, who went round the keeper and fired home. Wimbledon fought their way back into the game after 25 minutes when a short corner dragflick was deflected in unfortunately by Dave Powell’s head to make it 2-1, a scoreline which remained until half time.
The second half started with Epsom enjoying their best spell of the game, moving the ball around with pace and accuracy and constantly threatening the Wimbledon circle. However, it was the visitors who struck back with a superb counter attacking goal, started and then finished off emphatically by their centre back Charlie Tilson. Epsom shrugged off this setback and soon went 3-2 up when Matt Watts was found in acres of space in the circle and slipped the ball calmly past the onrushing keeper. Wimbledon then fought back and after a bright period, the visitors levelled it up at 3-3 from another short corner dragflick. Wimbledon then went ahead for the first time in the game with a well worked goal making it 4-3 with just 8 minutes to go. However, it was Epsom who then levelled it up when Jonny Hugo cut in from the left before being brought down for a penalty flick, which the striker converted himself.
The final stages of the game saw some tired stuff from both sides and a draw was a fair result. Epsom continue pre-season preparations next week against Woking as part of a full club day at Goldsworth Park.
